Toshiro, Asuke, and Ishida: The Escort at the Story's Heart

The escort mission that drives Shadow of the Road revolves around one boy and the orbit of people attached to him. Toshiro, his mother Asuke, and the bodyguard Ishida are the three companions confirmed so far — two of them met during the open alpha — and the clearest window into how the game merges family drama with tactical roles.

Toshiro — the boy who could end a war

  • 14 years old and carrying immense, uncontrollable powers — the kind of power a losing side builds its last hopes around.
  • Tokugawa’s spymaster identifies him as the one who can change the course of the war against the Emperor’s technologically superior forces — and recruits Satoru and Akira specifically to protect him.
  • Desperate to prove himself and his worth — a motivation that sits awkwardly next to how dangerous he actually is.

Whether he is a weapon, a child, or both is presumably the question the full game keeps asking.

Asuke — the mother who becomes a monster

Toshiro’s mother joins the escort — and she is the game’s most visible proof that yōkai are not just enemies:

  • Working with her son, Asuke can transform into Jorōgumo, the arachnid yōkai of Japanese legend.
  • Her transformation is the flagship example of the game’s yōkai mechanic — in desperate situations, characters can become the monsters.
  • Married to Kenjiro, Toshiro’s stepfather — a rude, aggressively career-minded man who is very much part of the family’s tension.

Ishida — the hired shield

  • A yōjimbō — a professional bodyguard — originally employed to protect Kenjiro, not the boy.
  • The party’s frontline bulwark: built to absorb pressure and pay it back double.
  • His kit is blunt and effective: a headbutt that staggers even determined enemies, and a no-dachi whose sweeping arc brings down foes far larger than rank-and-file grunts. Alpha players consistently single him out as the satisfying heavy — a 150-kilo wall in full armor who can run enemies down and crush them underfoot.
