Ishida: Shadow of the Road's Armored Wall
Ishida is Shadow of the Road's yōjimbō — a hired bodyguard turned party bulwark whose headbutt and no-dachi carry the front line. Kit and role.
Ishida is the strong shoulder Shadow of the Road’s escort leans on — a yōjimbō, a professional bodyguard originally hired to protect Kenjiro (Asuke’s husband and Toshiro’s stepfather), not the boy everyone is actually fighting over. Contracts aside, he ends up exactly where he belongs: at the front.
The kit: blunt, effective, enormous
The developers describe him as the party’s main bulwark — built to absorb pressure and return it twofold:
- Crushing headbutt — staggers even the most determined foe; the reliable interrupt in a roster full of subtlety.
- No-dachi sweeping arc — his oversized greatsword brings down enemies far larger than ordinary grunts.
- Ironclad charge and bear hugs — the official spotlight bills him as an “impenetrable bastion” who draws the enemy’s ire; “you can run from a sword, but you can’t run from a giant man bear hugging you into oblivion.”
- Effective against everything — his headbutts, charges, and nōdachi swings spell doom not just for human enemies, but for yōkai and mechs — a rare all-purpose answer to the game’s three enemy classes.
His techniques are not clever. That is the point — while Asuke rearranges the timeline and the rōnin argue about honor, Ishida hits things until they stay down. The developers nickname him “the Boulder”: quick to start fights (especially under the influence of sake), quick to end them violently — and, per the official bio, “a warmhearted epicurean and loyal friend” off the battlefield.
The contract problem
His employment detail matters: Ishida’s loyalty was bought to protect Kenjiro — a rude, relentlessly aggressive man determined to stay at the top of his profession. When the party’s mission becomes “protect Toshiro,” Ishida is guarding a family whose priorities do not match his contract — fertile ground for the kind of disagreement the game’s approval and Kamido systems are built around.
For the family he is contracted to, see Toshiro, Asuke, and the escort; for the protagonists he flanks, Satoru and Akira; for the full cast, the roster.
